Color Services

So you want color but don’t know what service to book? We know that all of the jargon can be confusing— from balayage, foilayage, and babylights, to teasylights, strandlights, and hair painting (and the list goes on…!).

The good news is that it’s not your job to know the differences between these techniques, it’s ours! That’s why every color session begins with a personalized consultation. We’ll chat about your hair goals & how many highlights you’d like, and get a feel for your hair texture and type.

Based on that info, we’ll determine the ideal highlight method and/or combination of methods for your hair. We always individually tailor the techniques to your needs-- it’s never one size fits all! Keep in mind that different hair types typically require different techniques to achieve a similar end result (ie, your best friend’s balayage and babylight mix may not work for your hair!).

With all of that said, here’s a quick overview of all of our highlight services to help guide the way.

+ Full Highlights / First Session Highlights

This is a great service to book if you want highlights all over your head, or if it’s your first time visiting us at Joon Drop. This longer session will allow your stylist enough time to “start from scratch” and get as close to your desired hair goal as possible. If, after your consult, you & your stylist decide a full highlight isn’t necessary, we will gladly do only what is needed. Remember, we like to use different highlighting techniques to achieve your goals!

+ Halo or Face Frame Highlight

This is your service if you want a few highlights sprinkled throughout the hair, a money piece plus a few highlights in your partline, or an awesome nineties “headband” around your hairline!

+ Full Head + Highlight

For lack of a better term, this is the mother of all lightening services. We will be together all day! Bring a snack, bring a book… this is a full color transformation.

+ Low Lights

Feeling over blonde or too bright? Low lights fix this by adding depth and dimension to your hair, making your existing highlights look brighter and less brassy. If you’re getting a standard highlighting service, it’s not necessary to book separate lowlights, as we may add some in, based on your needs.

150+

+ Single Process

This is one color applied to all of your hair, and it’s great for grey coverage. We use either a permanent color or a demi-permanent color, based on your needs. Prior to treatment, we’ll discuss all of your options, including different types of chemicals, potential damage, and how often you’d like to be back in the salon for maintenance. A single process service at Joon Drop always includes a gloss and a blow dry.

175+

+ Gloss Refresh

This service keeps your highlight service looking fresh and non-brassy! It includes a root shadow if necessary.

A color melt is a little more tailored than your standard gloss or root shadow, and it’s perfect for people who have existing highlights and want to go richer, darker, more golden, or more red!

Common Misconceptions

+ Balayage versus Foilayage

These are often confused for one another, even by professionals! Basically, the difference is the drama level. Quick breakdown:

Balayage is a technique where the stylist hand paints the highlights on the hair. The stylist and the client will discuss where exactly the highlights will live and the stylist will paint accordingly. These highlights are exposed to air, which usually results in a warmer result. The brightness is also usually fairly subtle, unless you have naturally light hair. But what if you have dark hair or want a more dramatic result? Que Foilayage!

Foiliyage allows for a balayage look, but the highlights live in foils instead of being exposed to air. Because the highlights are in foils, the products stays wet longer, allowing the hair to lighten more, resulting in a more dramatic highlight. Since the result is lighter, the stylist is allowed control when tailoring your final tone.

+ Permanent versus Demi Permanent Hair Color

A lot of people incorrectly assume that if permanent hair color isn’t used, it won’t last. Conversely, some think that Demi-permanent color will vanish after 12 washes. These are myths that the hair color industry has pushed to make things “easier” to grasp, but it really creates more confusion!

Permanent Hair Color highly penetrates your hair shaft, thanks to different ingredients and a higher PH. This allows the product to open up your hair’s cuticle, take out your natural pigment, and replace it with artificial pigment. For this reason, it’s critical to let us know your hair history! Everything that has been on your hair growth is relevant to us, as it will impact the results.

Demi permanent hair colors usually have gentler ingredients and a lower PH, resulting in a gentler process and a softer line of demarcation as the hair grows out. Demi’s don’t have the capability to lighten the hair, don’t cause any damage to the hair, and are great for a person wanting to “dip their toes” into the world of hair color. They’re also great for grey blending, shine, and tonal changes! Demi colors come in every tone (red, gold, etc), and every depth, from clear to black. They also can have many different pigment weights. In other words, we like to say we carry everything from a water color to an acrylic. Though Demi’s never fully “wash out”, they are easier for us to remove if a client wants to go lighter.

Everything we use has the most modern technology, and we will be happy to go over everything and determine the best product to use.
